Some places you stumble into… others you’re lucky enough to be told about.

Osteria Cyrano in Lugano is one of those rare insider tips – the kind of place the locals want to keep for themselves.

Tucked away from the flashy lakeside promenade, this osteria feels more like a shaded Ticino grotto, with its lush terrace, creeping vines, and gentle murmur of relaxed conversation (until Mr. Grumpy started grumbling about the wine glass size).

We were greeted by Luca, the charming Maitre, with a warmth that instantly made us feel like regulars – even if we were clearly just passing through. And then came Chef René Nagy’s masterpieces:

a delicate, paper-thin Vitello Tonnato that deserves a standing ovation (or at least an extra spoon of sauce) and Tagliatelle alle Vongole with clams so fresh, they probably whispered their goodbyes.

Add a crisp glass of Franciacorta and a bowl of breadsticks (yes, we fought over the last one), and you’ve got yourself a Grumpy-approved midday feast.

So here’s our not-so-secret tip:

Skip the touristy ristorantes. Find the osterie. That’s where the real magic – and mozzarella – lives.
