Autumn has its very own scents: crisp leaves, smoky air, and – for many of us in Switzerland – the nostalgic aroma of Magenbrot. This sweet, spiced pastry has been a beloved classic at fairs and autumn markets for generations. Packed in little paper bags, it was once the highlight of every Chilbi (funfair). Today, you can easily bake it at home and enjoy it with a hot cup of tea on a rainy day.
Recipe (easy homemade version)
Ingredients
- 250 g sugar
- 200 ml water
- 2 tbsp honey
- ½ tsp ground cloves
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp nutmeg
- 1 pinch of salt
- 500 g flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tbsp cocoa powder 1 tbsp kirsch optional
Instructions
- Mix sugar, water, and honey in a pan, bring to a short boil, then let cool. Stir in spices. Add flour, cocoa, and baking powder, knead into a dough. Form rolls, cut into small pieces, and bake until slightly firm. Finally, coat with a thin sugar glaze.
Nutrition
The name Magenbrot literally means “stomach bread.” It doesn’t come from a medical function, but from the old belief that the spices were good for digestion.
Freezer Tip:
Magenbrot keeps wonderfully well in the freezer. I often freeze a batch, and whenever I fancy something sweet, I simply take out a piece, wait 10 minutes – and then indulge. A little autumn luxury, always at hand! 🍁✨
Why it’s perfect for autumn:
It combines the cozy flavors of cinnamon and cloves with the comforting texture of a soft, slightly chewy bite – making it a perfect autumn snack, whether for a hike, a market stroll, or simply a quiet evening at home.
