The Wooden Soul of the Bregenzerwald
The Wooden Soul of the Bregenzerwald

There is something magical about the Bregenzerwald in autumn. The forests glow in shades of gold and russet, the air feels fresh and crisp – and everywhere you look, wood is at the heart of daily life.

For centuries, people here have built their homes with timber from the surrounding forests. But what fascinates me most is how tradition meets modernity in the architecture. You’ll find centuries-old farmhouses standing proudly next to sleek, minimalist wooden houses that look as if they were designed yesterday. And yet, both belong – perfectly – in this landscape.

The façades are often clad with hand-split wooden shingles that change color with the years, blending naturally into the seasons. Inside, it smells faintly of pine or spruce, and the warmth of the wood creates a cosiness that no other material can match.

Fun fact: The Bregenzerwald is known worldwide for its innovative timber architecture. The region even has an “Architectural Trail” where you can walk from village to village and discover award-winning wooden buildings.

For me, this is slow travel at its best – walking through a village, admiring the craftsmanship, and realizing that beauty and sustainability can go hand in hand.

👉 Would you like to live in such a wooden house, even if only for a holiday? I can promise you: once you do, you’ll never forget the feeling.
